Specialities

Each of us is the sum of our experiences in life. The secret is discovering how those experiences interrelate. I offer professional counselling in the areas described below.

Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Self-Defeating Behaviours

Apprehension or fear is the cause of anxiety and the source of that cannot always be determined or recognised. The subconscious does not deal well with uncertainties and throughout life we go through a process of change. These changes can create a sense of anxiety.
Stress is a feeling that people will usually be able to identify. By contrast one might have a continual sense of anxiety that is difficult to identify. Someone who has been subjected to long-term stress can cause anxiety. It may also occur when we feel threatened by a person or situation. Stress is an incidental experience that we can overcome more easily than anxiety, whereas anxiety can affect our emotions, behaviour or physical health. A negative cycle can be created, meaning the more anxious we feel the more heightened the anxiety becomes and the more negative we feel, which in turn makes us avoid the situations that make us feel anxious. In this sense, we might be able to identify the situations that make us anxious, but unlike stress, we cannot explain why it is making us feel that way. Coming to counselling for a person centred integrative approach can help overcome stress and anxiety and move you into a more fulfilled and content state.

Bereavement & Loss

Grief is a complicated process and affects us all differently. There is no golden rule for fixing grief and the myriad of symptoms must be recognised and assisted in therapy. This is imperative to the healing process to help you through all the stages of grief.

Addiction

Addiction is widespread amongst society and has no boundaries. It can be found in any culture, socio economic group, class, race, creed, sexuality, or religion. The immediate assumption that springs to mind when considering addiction is that it is about smoking, alcoholism or drug abuse. The less obvious types of addiction, though, include: overeating, ‘chocoholics’, shopping or ‘shopaholics’, overuse of online devices, pornography, sex, working and hoarding. In fact, addiction can be any habitual process, rooting itself in the subconscious mind.
An integrative and varied approach to treating addiction is most effective. We must consider each individual and their own set of circumstances that have led to the addictive behaviour. As therapists our role is then to facilitate the change and hold the addictive client through this process.
